At the Oct. 8 inauguration of the 10th India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said more than 500 million people in India are connected to the gaming ecosystem in some way. He described the figure as an estimate and did not define it as a count of unique active players.[1][3]
Modi said young people in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are playing games, competing in esports, creating gaming content and building gaming businesses. He placed gaming after describing wider mobile access, expanded telecom infrastructure and more affordable data, and called the phone both a gaming console and a creation studio.[1][4]
The address presented gaming as part of India’s mobile-led digital economy story. It did not announce a new gaming or esports programme, fund or policy.[1]
