Topic

Under-16 social-media accounts

Current position

Malaysia's Child Protection Code and Risk Mitigation Code took effect on 1 June 2026. The Child Protection Code requires licensed social-media service providers to use age verification; people below 16 may not open or hold social-media accounts. The codes apply to licensed Application Service Providers and Content Application Service Providers under the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866).[3]

Commercial implication

Publishers, esports organizers and creators should verify which services fall within the rules and how providers implement age checks before planning youth-facing account access or distribution. This account rule should not be assumed to prohibit game access itself.
