The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the governing body of the Olympic Games, founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin. Headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, the IOC oversees the Olympic movement, including the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, and increasingly, virtual sports and esports initiatives.

Esports and the IOC

Under the Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and the “Fit for the Future” strategic plan, the IOC has explored the integration of virtual sports and competitive gaming into the Olympic ecosystem. The IOC established the Esports Commission in September 2023 to explore the potential of esports within the Olympic framework.
