Blizzard introduced Overwatch Contenders in 2017 as a regional development competition for aspiring Overwatch League professionals. Its opening program began in North America and Europe, with open qualifiers, regional regular seasons and offline playoffs. Blizzard described the series as a route for emerging players and teams to gain visibility.[1]

The program expanded into more regions and connected to regional competition structures. The 2018 official rules document set out a promotion and participation framework for the Overwatch League, while prize pools and fields varied by region and season rather than forming one global annual event.[2]

Blizzard later retired the Contenders branding in 2024. The historical record is relevant to player development and regional competition design, but it should not be treated as current inventory or a continuing pathway after the brand’s retirement.[3]
